Noted sociologist and the first African American President of Fisk University, Charles Spurgeon Johnson was born on July 24, 1893 in Bristol, Virginia. Johnson is known for his study on race relations in the United States and in Liberia. He died on October 27, 1956 in Louisville, Kentucky at age 63. His grandson Jeh Johnson was the United States Secretary of Homeland Security from 2013 to 2017.
