David Paterson, the first African American Governor of New York was born on May 20, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. While serving as Lieutenant Governor,  Paterson became Governor when Eliot Spitzer resigned from his gubernatorial office.  Paterson served as Governor from 2008 until 2010. He was also the second legally blind governor in the United States.
