Marian Wright EdelmanChildren's rights activist and president and founder of the Children's Defense Fund, Marian Wright Edelman was born on June 6, 1939. Edelman's early professional career began after graduating from Spellman College and Yale Law School. She was admitted to the Mississippi Bar as it's first African American woman. She worked in civil rights as an attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in it's Mississippi office. After founding the Children's Defense Fund in 1973, Edelman has been dedicated to the betterment of children's welfare.
