March 19, 1935 – The 1935 Harlem Riot
This riot which was initiated by unfounded rumors of a teenage Black Puerto Rican being beaten and possibly killed for shoplifting at a merchant store, sparked Harlem’s first race riot. The riot resulted in three deaths and hundreds wounded.
